In a first, Karnataka police to recruit eight transgenders

BENGALURU: Throwing open its doors to transgenders for the first time, Karnataka police invited applications from the community in the ongoing recruitment for appointing special reserve subinspectors and Scene Of Crime Officers (SOCOs).
According to a notification published by the Additional Director General of Police (Recruitment), five of the 70 posts are reserved for transgenders.Aspirants can submit their online application from December 12 till January 18.
The Forensic Science Laboratory too has invited applications to fill 206 Scene Of Crime Officer posts with three vacancies reserved for transgenders. Aspirants have time till January 15 to submit applications online. The Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977, was amended to give1% reservation for transgenders.
‘Organisations should support transgenders’
The government had amended its Karnataka Civil Services (General Recruitment) Rules, 1977 in July to provide 1% reservation for transgenders in all recruitments.
“As per the government order, we reserved five posts for transgenders and called for applications,” said Amrit Paul, additional director general of police (recruitment).
According to the notification, four posts will be filled by transgenders for the post of special reserve sub-inspector for Karnataka State Reserve Police and one special reserve sub-inspector for India Reserve Battalion.
Transgenders must obtain a certificate from the district magistrate as per the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2020 notified by the ministry of social Justice and empowerment. The application will not be considered if the aspirant doesn’t have this certificate.
Sangama, a non-profit NGO working for the rights of transgender people, welcomed the notification. “Other organisations should take a cue as directed by the court and provide livelihood opportunities for them,” said Rajesh Umadevi, executive director, Sangama.
